What a cold email sequence that gets replies looks like
The best cold sequences are short, specific and about the prospect. The opener names a problem the reader recognises in the first line, offers one concrete way to fix it and asks a question that is easy to answer. It does not introduce your company, list features or attach a deck.
Follow-ups exist because most replies come after the first touch, but only if each message earns its place. A good follow-up adds a proof point, a new angle on the pain, or a useful resource. A bad one says 'just checking in' and asks for the same thing again.
- Opener under 90 words, follow-ups under 60.
- One call to action per email, phrased as a question.
- Subject lines under 50 characters, sentence case, no punctuation tricks.
- Send follow-ups as replies in the same thread.
- Stop after three or four touches and rotate the account into a new sequence later.
How Nova structures the sequence
Email 1 is problem-first: it opens with the pain you described, connects it to what you sell in one sentence and ends with a low-friction ask. Email 2 brings proof, usually a short story or a specific outcome, and repeats the ask. Email 3 changes the pace: a breakup, a resource, or a different pain, with permission to say no.
Merge tags like {{firstName}} and {{company}} are placed where personalisation belongs. Most sequencers use the same double-brace syntax; if yours does not, replace them before you import.
Email 1 · Day 0 · problem-first opener, one question
Email 2 · Day 3 · proof point, same thread
Email 3 · Day 7 · breakup or resource, easy outBefore you send: infrastructure matters more than copy
Great copy does nothing from a mailbox that lands in spam. Every sending domain needs SPF, DKIM and DMARC published, MX records in place and a warmup period before real volume. Keep daily sends per mailbox modest and spread campaigns across several domains so one bad day does not burn the whole account.
InboxOne provisions domains and Google Workspace mailboxes with SPF, DKIM and DMARC set automatically, so the sequence you generate here can go out from a domain that is already reply-ready.
- Run the finished emails through the spam word checker.
- Test subject lines for length and preview text.
- Personalise the first line for your top accounts by hand.
- Track replies, not opens, and cut the angle that gets none.
